As the founder of St. Petersburg Yoga, Chris Acosta began a daily practice almost 30 years ago while in a full body brace (for 4 years and 23 hours a day) to first heal his extreme scoliosis. The degree of scoliosis consisted of two curvatures with the largest at almost 50 degrees, multiple herniated discs, pinched nerves and spinal arthritis. Freed from the severe pain, deformation of the body, and armed with these successes, he focused on the greater liberations in which Yoga was originally designed.
Mr. Acosta aspires to demonstrate the true power of authentic Yoga and the amazing abilities it has to transform any area that binds and limits, from the pain and handicaps of the body to the mental traps that cause seemingly inescapable cycles of suffering.
Chris holds an E-RYT 500 educator level certification from Yoga Alliance and is also honored to be a part of the distinguished faculty at the Omega Institute in New York.
Known for developing Yoga Traction Therapy, he instructs from many influences: Iyengar, Therapeutic, Restorative, Ashtanga, Power, Vinyasa, Pranayama, Mantra, Meditation, Yoga Philosophy, Yoga Sutras, Upanishads and the Bhagavad-Gita. He specializes with the injured and very beginner to the intermediate and most advanced students. Chris's open group classes are geared to accommodating
all levels.

Melanie Ulrich, Director
Melanie's journey with yoga began 11 years ago when her brother encouraged her to attend her first yoga class. She was hooked from the start. Yoga was an enlightening experiencecreating balance and fulfillment in her life. Melanie has always wanted to pursue a path in helping and healing others, and like many, was torn between a successful corporate career and following her heart in the science of Yoga.
Now, she has found a way to combine her worldly corporate experiences with her passion for facilitating the Yoga experience.
Melanie completed her 200-Hour RYT Training with St. Petersburg Yoga, which was a gift that led her into following her dreams of becoming a teacher.
Her strong practices include Vinyasa Flow and Ashtanga. After sustaining a neck injury, Melanie realized she would like to help others who encounter similar circumstances. She has since broadened her practice to incorporate a Gentle Restorative approach as well.

Rubén
Vásquez
I began practicing Yoga daily in 1996,
and every day I look forward to the overall well being
that Yoga brings into my life. As is the case for many
yogis, Yoga has inspired my way of living. When family
and friends started asking me to lead Yoga sessions for
them, I felt honored and exhilarated to have the opportunity
and responsibility to share my love of Yoga.
I
am grateful for the opportunities I have to touch other people’s
lives through Yoga. I hope Yoga brings as many teachings,
joy and well-being to them as it has brought to me. I feel that
teaching Yoga, besides being a dream come true, is an honor and
a responsibility that requires attention, knowledge, caring, preparation
and flexibility. More than a teacher, I see myself as a dedicated
student who loves to practice, learn and share. Every day I am excited
to explore, research, practice, and share Yoga with others. Following
the example of teachers I admire, in every class I do my best to
help students discover their own way of practicing. Visit www.rubenvasquez.com for more information.

Gail Newfield is
a graduate of St. Petersburg Yoga's 200-Hour RYT Training program and enrolled in the highest level of Yoga certification training (the 500-Hour RYT Training Program here at St. Petersburg Yoga). Her style of teaching is restorative as she leads with light, love, and care. Gail will help you learn to restore and strengthen the weakened and imbalanced areas of the body/mind, thus seeking that ultimate pain-free balance.
Gail's classes are suitable for all ages and all abilities. From athletes with tight muscles to mature bodies with physical challenges, she can help you listen and learn how to live in your own body. In her Restorative 1-2, Iyengar/Vinyasa classes, Gail blends yoga postures for the upper and lower body with core work in a gentle, flowing sequence. As a spin and core instructor for several years now, she knows these yoga sequences are excellent for athletes seeking to restore imbalances.
Gail brings a lifelong passion for movement and health to St. Petersburg Yoga. Having lived many years as a "super-mom" while trying to be a "super-everything", she found Restorative Yoga relieved anxiety and muscle tension. She also learned how to heal her ownimbalances by nurturing a relaxed mind and connecting to the subtle body.

Jill Voorhis
Know your body...Observe your mind.
When I first stepped onto the mat over 15 years ago I knew I had discovered something special.
After a few months of practice, I realized yoga would be a lifetime journey for me.
As a triathlete and distance runner, I saw the value in the softer side of movement, knowing it would bring balance, strength, flexibility and mental focus to my busy life.
My slow flow classes mix a blend of stress relieving breath work, energizing strong postures and tension releasing flexibility postures. Many of my classes also incorporate traction therapy and creative use of the yoga swing for building core strength and harnessing the benefits of hanging upside down in full inversion.
As an active triathlete, I also work with endurance athletes, teaching the benefits of muscular balance: muscles strong enough to do the action and long enough to cover the distance faster, without injury.
Jill is a registered Yoga Alliance Teacher at the 500-Hour level.

Katie Capra
Feeling a sense of dharma (duty) early on in life and a connection with yoga, Katie knew this was her path. She graduated from St. Pete Yoga 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training in 2010 and will begin working on her 500-Hour RYT Training in 2012.
Her Beach Yoga classes incorporate the natural elements, breath work, and organic body movement. The flowing sounds of the waves and salty air bring a calming sense to the nervous system and the mind.
Movement through the postures and sifting sand below create a greater sense of connection with body awareness. It is a practice of meditation is motion.
Her Power Mind Body class revitalizes and cleanses the body, challenging strength, balance, and flexibility while incorporating twisting postures to detoxify the internal organs. Mindfulness of edge is vital to this practice.

Adam Higman
Adam first began practicing yoga over 10 years ago and became hooked. Since then he has practiced with a variety of styles incorporating meditation, pranayama and asana. He has particularly enjoyed the challenges and growth opportunities provided by Power based classes having regularly practiced Ashtanga, Heated Power, and other challenging flow styles. His teaching philosophy is grounded from the yoga sutras: "No failure is ever really a failure unless we stop trying altogether" believing that a lifelong practice does not mean we are all doing full splits, but rather that we are challenging ourselves and growing.
In line with this philosophy, Adam tries to facilitate a safe place where we can challenge ourselves (whether mentally or physically) each time we come to the mat. Adam completed his 200-hour RYT at St Petersburg Yoga and is currently working towards his 500-hour RYT.

Ashley McHan
Ashley began studying yoga after becoming strongly attached to the benefits of her practice. She found that with more time spent on her mat, she was able to move through her days feeling happier, more grounded, and less affected by daily stresses. She soon discovered many connections between yoga and her professional practice as a mental health counselor. "I started to offer yoga to those I was working with at an eating disorder center in Boston.
The response was great and it motivated me to continuing learning about the mind body concepts of yoga." Ashley aims to help others find balance both on and off the mat. "Our yoga practice may start with our physical body, but if we let it, it will start to work wonders on the state of our mind." Her greatest satisfaction comes from helping her students tap in and start listening to themselves to learn something new. In Ashley's Sun Rise classes, you can expect a slow, mindful flow to start your morning and prepare you to embark on your day. These classes are good for beginners and up.

Deserie Valloreo
Deserie Valloreo was initially drawn to yoga in order to promote balance in her life. She became a yoga instructor to fulfill her life path (dharma) of serving others through health and wellness. Deserie is a graduate of St. Petersburg Yoga's 200-Hour RYT Training program She specializes in the restorative style of teaching with a focus on working with those who are new to yoga.
Deserie's classes center on stretching to lengthen and release tense muscles and boosting flexibility and range of motion from head to toe. Her classes are suitable for all ages and all abilities. Deserie is very passionate about empowering people to take care of their mind and body naturally. In addition to being a yoga instructor, she is also a Clinical Herbalist and Natural Health Advisor.
Like many people, I found reiki, yoga and massage as tools to help me recover from a health crisis. In the summer of 2000, I was extremely sick. My body was shutting down all its natural processes. Swollen with edema, my muscles contracted and in pain, I could not walk to the end of my driveway.
Immediately, I realized that although the medical world could keep me alive, it didn't have the tools to keep me healthy, vibrant and whole.
Taking full responsibility for my health, I became a Reiki Master and have been sharing Reiki Energy Therapy with others for the past seven years. The biggest improvement in health has come as a result of a daily yoga practice. Asanas, pranayama and meditation have been a part of my daily life for nearly five years.
Explore deep adjustments and alignment usually reserved for those paying for a private Thai Yoga session.
Penny Heffelfinger
I had been practicing Yoga for 15 years when I realized the Yogic Path encompassed all the tools I needed to assist me in my personal growth and my daily life. I am an RYT 200-Hour instructor, a graduate of St. Petersburg Yoga.
I began my journey in the Health Industry in Fitness and Aquatics 30 years ago in the Chicago area. Through continued practice, I now apply the principles of yoga to every type of class I teach.
My style of class includes Vinyasa (movement) to warm the body moving smoothly into strength and balance practice and finishing with cooling asana on the mat and savasana.
I have found that by focusing on the breath through every pose and moving with each breath I discover new insights and openings into the incredible strength and awareness of my body. I am honored to assist my students in exploring their true strength and ability through their yoga practice.
Penny is enrolled in the 500-Hour Teacher Training Program at St. Petersburg Yoga.
