Program Outline

You know how an excellent yoga class dissolves tension knots in your neck and shoulders, relaxes the tightness in your hamstrings and lower back, quiets the incessant mind chatter and opens your heart, leaving you happy, satisfied and deeply relaxed. If the effects of 1 yoga class last for a few days, imagine what happens as you go through a complete program of progressive yoga practices designed to integrate your body, breath, mind and spirit.

In this retreat you will be expertly guided through these stages:

1. Anticipation & Preparation

• We have been there before, we'll help you prepare for this amazing journey.
• You will receive Pre-departure Instructions, Packing List & General Information
• We share with you Rubén's itinerary so that you can choose the same flight and benefit from his bicultural and bilingual expertise when you arrive in San Jose.

2. Transition
• We strongly recommend staying the first night in San Jose to help you ease into retreat mode
• We'll stroll along the streets of downtown San Jose enjoying the local color and leaving all worries behind.

3. Arrival
• After savoring a delicious typical local breakfast we'll board our shuttle to the Caribbean coast.
• You will start shifting to infinite time mindset as you observe the biodiversity that has made Costa Rica famous.
• Travelling at a leisurely pace we'll stop to taste the freshness of the local cuisine. • Not long after we feel the Caribbean breeze we will be greeted by the sounds of the tropical rainforest and the pristine beauty at Samasati Nature Retreat.

4. Meeting yourself where you are
• We'll start with a series of yoga techniques including breathing, postures, concentration and mindfulness to help us acclimate to our new surroundings and let go of accumulated stress.
• With every healthful meal you will delight in the variety of flavors and aromas prepared lovingly with the freshest local ingredients.
• We'll plant seeds of personal transformation with a deeply relaxing yoga nidra practice.

5. Immersion
• Each day you will learn traditional and contemporary yoga techniques to nurture and nourish yourself.

• At your leisure rejoice in the peace and calm of the lush rainforest. You will have ample time to rest, relax, and engage in reflection.

Who is the guide and teacher?

Your teacher and guide is Rubén Vásquez, E-RYT500. Rubén has been practicing yoga daily since 1996 and is a dedicated student and devoted teacher with extensive experience practicing and teaching a wide variety of Yoga techniques (including gentle restorative, restorative/therapeutic, slow flow, meditation, breathing, deep relaxation) as well as training yoga teachers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why go to Costa Rica?

Costa Rica has been ranked as one of the happiest places in the world. It has amazing biodiversity, a wonderful temperate climate and delicious food. It is easy and safe to travel to Costa Rica from the U.S. From the retreat perspective, travelling to a place different from our own frees us from our everyday concerns and responsibilities enabling us to reflect and look within.

Is Costa Rica safe?

Costa Rica is the safest place in Central and South America. They don't even have an army! Almost 50% of the country is considered a nature reserve. You will not be surprised to learn how many American citizens have chosen Costa Rica as their retirement home.

I am not very experienced traveling internationally. Will I be OK?

Rubén has lived and traveled in the Americas, Europe and Asia. As a seasoned traveler he understands the needs of international travelers. Just as in his classes and workshops Rubén creates a safe space for students to explore yoga within their capabilities, during the trip Rubén guides participants and is happy to assist in many ways to ensure that you will have a truly enjoyable journey.

What happens if I don't speak Spanish?

Costa Rica is a very hospitable country that has made it easy for international people to visit. Many people in Costa Rica speak English fluently. You will not need to know Spanish to enjoy your trip. Rubén is always glad to interpret and translate in the rare occasions when the people you come in contact with do not speak English. All the optional excursions will have an English speaking guide. At the retreat center the staff speaks English fluently with a beautiful Caribbean accent.

What if I have food allergies?

At the nature retreat the food is prepared with fresh local ingredients daily. The dishes are vegetarian and the chefs have experience adjusting menu items to a wide range of dietary requeriments. Just let us know about your dietary needs when you sign up so that we can ensure that the kitchen staff at the retreat center can prepare delicious and healthy dishes that will agree with you and your needs.

What does the schedule of a typical day look like?

We set the tone of the day with an invigorating morning practice to wake up body & mind from 7am to 9am. At 9 we have breakfast overlooking the forest with the Caribbean Sea in the background. The rest of the morning is open for you to enjoy at your leisure. Lunch is served from 1pm to 2pm. The afternoon is free until 5pm when we meet for our evening practice that includes deep relaxation until 7pm. Dinner is served at 7pm. As night falls we retire to our bungalows for deep rest.

What if I don't practice yoga regularly at home, will I be able to keep up with the practice?

Everybody is welcome and encouraged to attend. During the retreat you will expand your horizons to the complete spectrum of authentic yoga practice. In other words, we will not be practicing yoga postures the whole day. Instead you will enjoy a progressive lesson plan offering options to participants at all levels. Some of the techniques include breathing, mindfulness, concentration, relaxation, meditation techniques and suggestions for application of yoga techniques in daily life. The emphasis is in meeting yourself where you are and creating a practice that helps you feel vibrant and alive. Here are some comments from previous participants:

What is the payment schedule? Sign Up today!

  • A minimum deposit of 50% is required when you sign up to hold your reservation.
  • In order to receive the early-bird reduced price you need to pay in full by April 30th
  • Total balance is due by July 1st.  If the balance is not paid in full by the due date, we will regard the booking as canceled.

What is NOT included?

  • Airfare (varies - 550 - 700 round trip from Tampa to San Jose, Costa Rica -SJO) We found a very convenient itinerary with competitive rates through Spirit Airlines. Also, in the past some participants have found good rates through JetBlue leaving from Orlando.
  • 1st Night hotel in San Jose (around $60-80)
  • Shuttle from Samasati to Puerto Viejo - around $8-10 per person depending on the number of people.
  • Meals outside of Samasati
  • Individual/Private Yoga sessions with Rubén Vásquez - $65/hr
  • Optional activities see list below (starting around $40 & up )
  • Massages (can be  scheduled at Samasati - starting at $75/hr )

  • Tips & Gratuities (Usually at Samasati, the group leader collects tips from the participants and gives them to the manager at Samasati before leaving, so that ALL the employees can be receive an equal share. Since the staff is always excellent, we suggest a tip of at least $50 per person)

What about cancellations?

  • Should the trip fail to achieve minimum participation, St Petersburg Yoga reserves the right to cancel the retreat and refund any deposits received.
  • All payments are non-refundable.
  • In case of cancellation you will receive credit for a future St Petersburg Yoga retreat.
  • No cancellations allowed. We strongly suggest you purchase cancellation insurance to cover any cancellation fees applicable.
  • There will be no refunds for arriving late or leaving early.
  • There are no exceptions to the above cancellation policies including personal injuries or weather.

Hotels in San José

Since the trip from San José to Samasati takes around 4.5 hours by car, we suggest for you to stay in San José overnight to make the journey more relaxing and the transition into retreat mode more enjoyable. In case you plan to arrive in San José on Sunday, July 28th (and if you plan to leave Costa Rica on Saturday August 3rd) the Hotel 1492 is one of the hotels that we recommend. We like this hotel because the accommodations and breakfast are very nice, it is centrally located and especially because it is a locally-owned small business. In addition, they are offering us a special discounted (25%) group rate!

Yoga Sessions


Yoga sessions will be tailored so that they are appropriate for all retreat participants.  

All of the Yoga instruction will be conducted by Rubén Vásquez on site. Rubén’s classes cultivate mindfulness, flow seamlessly and integrate all aspects of Yoga. Over 18 hours of Yoga instruction include:

  • 4 early morning classes (2 hours each)
  • 5 evening classes (2 hours each)
  • 1 early morning practice on the last day of the retreat
